Blocked Nose in Kids? Try These Simple Home Remedies for Quick Relief

As the weather shifts between cool mornings and hot afternoons, young children often catch colds — one of the most common symptoms being a blocked nose. When congestion sets in, babies struggle to breathe, sleep, or even feed properly, leaving parents anxious and sleep-deprived. If not addressed in time, the condition can worsen.

While there are plenty of nasal sprays and medicines available, traditional home remedies are often the safest and most effective for children. Here are some easy ways to relieve your child’s nasal blockage naturally.

1. Gentle Steam Therapy
Steam is one of the most effective remedies for nasal congestion. However, since babies cannot directly inhale steam, the trick is to let it fill the room.

  • Boil water in a corner of the room and let the steam spread.

  • The child will gradually inhale it, helping loosen the mucus.
For slightly older children, you can hold a bowl of hot water near them — but keep a safe distance to prevent burns.

2. Mustard Oil Massage
A warm mustard oil massage helps improve blood circulation and keeps the body warm.

  • Heat a little mustard oil until it’s just lukewarm.

  • Gently massage your child’s chest, back, and feet before bedtime.
This not only clears nasal blockage but also provides comfort and aids better sleep.

3. Homemade Salt Water Drops
Saline drops help loosen thick mucus, making breathing easier.

  • Mix 1/4 teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of lukewarm water.

  • Using a clean dropper, put 1–2 drops into each nostril.
This is a simple and safe way to provide instant relief for nasal congestion.

4. Garlic and Celery Pack
Garlic and celery (ajwain) both have antibacterial and warming properties.

  • Lightly roast 2–3 cloves of garlic and 1 teaspoon of celery seeds on a dry pan.

  • Wrap them in a small cotton cloth and place it near your child.
The aroma helps clear nasal congestion and soothes breathing discomfort.

5. Warm Celery Compress
This is another time-tested home remedy.

  • Combine a handful of celery seeds and a pinch of salt in a cotton cloth.

  • Warm it on a pan and gently press it on your child’s chest, back, and soles.
It helps open nasal passages and keeps the child’s body warm.
