The Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma government has made a major decision at a state cabinet meeting. The cabinet approved a bill banning polygamy. During the meeting, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the bill will be called "The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill 2025." It will be introduced in the Assembly on November 25th.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the approval of a bill banning polygamy at a cabinet meeting on Sunday. He said the government will also establish a new fund to compensate women victims of polygamy so they can live their lives without difficulty. Furthermore, these women will receive periodic government assistance. Instructions have been issued to officials to implement this plan.
The bill will be presented in the Assembly on November 25.

Earlier, on October 27th, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that a law would soon be enacted to ban polygamy in the state. He stated that the bill included measures targeting practices such as polygamy and love jihad. On Sunday, Himanta Biswa Sarma approved the bill banning polygamy after a cabinet meeting.
