Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone. The new device combines a compact outer screen with a much larger inner display, giving users a smartphone that can transform into a tablet-like device when opened.
The iPhone Duo is not simply a larger iPhone with a folding screen. Apple has redesigned the hardware, camera system and iOS experience specifically around the foldable form factor.
A 7.6-inch display when opened
The biggest attraction of the iPhone Duo is its foldable display.
When opened, the device features a 7.6-inch inner screen designed for activities such as watching videos, gaming, multitasking and working across multiple apps. When folded, users get a 5.4-inch outer display that keeps the phone compact enough for everyday use.
Both displays use the same aspect ratio, allowing content to transition between the two screens more naturally.
Apple focuses heavily on the hinge design
Foldable phones have traditionally faced questions around durability, thickness and hinge reliability.
Apple says the iPhone Duo uses a precision hinge designed to provide a smooth folding experience while maintaining the durability required for everyday use. The company has also incorporated a nano-texture finish on the inner display to reduce reflections and glare.
This is particularly relevant for people who use their phones for watching content, reading or working for extended periods.
The camera gets some interesting foldable features
Apple has also designed several camera features specifically around the folding form factor.
The iPhone Duo includes a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera and a Center Stage front camera. The folding design allows users to position the phone in different ways while taking photos or making video calls.
One interesting feature is Smart Take, which uses on-device AI to analyse a scene and automatically capture photos when subjects are ready.
This could make group photography easier because users can position the phone and avoid constantly running back and forth to press the shutter button.
Apple Intelligence becomes part of the experience
The iPhone Duo runs iOS 27 and includes Apple Intelligence features.
Apple says its AI system can use personal context to help users find information across areas such as messages, emails and photos. Siri can also use onscreen awareness to perform actions related to what is currently displayed.
Apple is also combining on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute for AI tasks that require additional processing.
A20 Pro chip powers the phone
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple's A20 Pro chip, also used in the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Apple says the chip has been designed to handle demanding tasks including gaming, multitasking and AI processing. The company also uses a custom vapour chamber and dual-battery architecture to help manage heat and power consumption.
The phone can therefore use its larger display without sacrificing the performance expected from a premium iPhone.
When will iPhone Duo be available?
Apple says pre-orders for the iPhone Duo will begin on October 16, 2026, with availability starting October 23.
The company has positioned the device as a completely new category within the iPhone lineup rather than simply another yearly upgrade.
Why the iPhone Duo matters
Apple's entry into the foldable market could further accelerate the shift towards phones that can transform between traditional smartphone and larger-screen experiences.
The combination of a 7.6-inch display, foldable design, powerful processor and AI features gives the iPhone Duo a different approach to mobile computing.
For consumers, the more interesting question will be whether a foldable iPhone can make the larger-screen experience convenient enough to replace the need for carrying a separate tablet or secondary device.
