Amla water, prepared from Indian gooseberry, is increasingly being recommended in traditional wellness practices for its potential benefits to digestion and overall health. In Ayurveda, amla is regarded as a medicinal fruit with properties that support internal cleansing and immunity.
Amla, commonly available during winter, is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Ayurvedic texts describe it as a fruit that helps balance the three doshas—vata, pitta, and kapha. Regular consumption is believed to aid digestion, reduce acidity, and support blood purification, while also contributing to healthier skin and hair.
While many people consume amla in the form of juice or raw fruit, its sharp and astringent taste limits widespread acceptance. Amla water is considered a milder alternative, offering similar benefits with improved palatability.
Digestive and Cooling Properties
According to Ayurvedic practitioners, amla water has a cooling effect on the body. It is said to help relieve common stomach-related complaints such as gas, heartburn, and indigestion. Method of Preparation
Amla water can be prepared by cutting or grating one or two amla fruits and soaking them in a glass of water overnight. The water is lightly boiled the next morning, strained, and consumed on an empty stomach. Consistent intake over several weeks is said to help in observing noticeable health benefits.
Skin, Hair, and Immunity Support
The antioxidants present in amla are believed to protect the body against infections and slow age-related changes. Regular intake is also associated with clearer skin and reduced hair fall, according to traditional health systems.

Experts advise moderation. Individuals with weak digestion or those prone to frequent colds, coughs, or excessive phlegm are cautioned against regular consumption, as amla’s cooling nature may aggravate such conditions.
