Artificial intelligence is rapidly expanding into new sectors, and healthcare is now the latest area witnessing this transformation. Tech giant Amazon has introduced a new AI-powered health assistant on its website and mobile app to help users manage information related to more than 30 common health conditions.
The company says the AI tool aims to simplify healthcare by answering questions about symptoms, medications and medical reports while also helping users connect with healthcare providers.
What the AI Health Assistant Can Do
The new AI assistant can:
-
Explain lab test results and medical reports
-
Answer questions about symptoms and medicines
-
Conduct basic virtual health assessments
-
Suggest when users should consult a doctor
-
Connect patients with healthcare professionals
According to Andrew Diamond, the tool is designed to handle routine information and logistical tasks so that doctors and patients can focus more on actual treatment.
Integration With Amazon One Medical
The service is linked to Amazon One Medical, Amazon’s clinical healthcare platform. Initially, the advanced version of the AI model will be available to members of One Medical.
However, Amazon clarified that the basic AI assistant will be accessible to everyone, even if they are not members of Amazon Prime or One Medical.
Conditions the AI Can Help With
The AI assistant can provide guidance for non-emergency health issues, including:
-
Acne
-
Head lice
-
Diabetes
-
Sleep apnea
It can also help track symptoms, provide health information and guide patients on when professional medical care may be necessary.
Privacy and Consultation Costs
To use the tool fully, customers must grant the assistant permission to access medical records, lab reports and clinical notes.
Amazon has clarified that the AI assistant does not create treatment plans. Instead, it connects patients to healthcare providers when a condition requires professional medical attention.
For users who are not One Medical members, consultations through the platform may cost around $29 per session.
