AI Boom in India: Delhi-NCR Leads ChatGPT Usage, But Other States Show Unique Trends

India is rapidly emerging as one of the most dynamic markets for artificial intelligence, with strong adoption across regions and industries. A recent study by OpenAI highlights how deeply AI tools like ChatGPT are being integrated into everyday life, with usage patterns varying significantly across the country.

The report reveals that Delhi-NCR has the highest concentration of ChatGPT users in India, making it the leading hub for AI adoption. Nearly half of all AI users in the country are based in the top 10 cities, reflecting how urban centers are driving the initial wave of AI growth. However, the story doesn’t end with metro cities—smaller states and regions are showing equally interesting usage trends.

In eastern states such as Assam, Odisha, Manipur, Tripura, and Chhattisgarh, AI is being heavily used for education and learning. In Assam alone, around 22 percent of ChatGPT interactions are related to education—significantly higher than the national average. This indicates that students and learners in these regions are actively leveraging AI for academic support and skill development.

Meanwhile, northern and southern regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, and the union territory Chandigarh are showing a strong inclination toward health and wellness-related queries. In Jammu and Kashmir, nearly 10 percent of all interactions focus on health topics, highlighting how AI is becoming a trusted source for basic medical information and lifestyle advice.

Another key insight from the study is the rapid growth of advanced AI usage. Since the launch of Codex, OpenAI’s AI coding tool, user adoption has surged dramatically, with a fourfold increase in just two weeks. Indian users are particularly active in areas like coding and data analysis, showcasing the country’s growing technical expertise and interest in AI-driven productivity tools.

Overall, while Delhi-NCR dominates in terms of sheer user numbers, the real story lies in how differently AI is being used across India. From education in the east to health queries in the north and south, AI is no longer limited to tech hubs—it is becoming a part of daily life across diverse regions.
