A recent development concerning pilgrimage norms at Uttarakhand’s revered shrines has triggered widespread discussion, after reports suggested that non-Hindu devotees may be required to submit an affidavit declaring faith in Sanatan Dharma before offering prayers.
The reported guideline, attributed to the authorities managing Kedarnath Temple and Badrinath Temple, indicates that individuals not formally identified as Hindus would need to provide written assurance of their belief in Hinduism to participate in पूजा rituals during the Char Dham Yatra.
The issue has drawn attention due to its potential impact on prominent devotees such as Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan, who is widely known for her spiritual visits to Kedarnath and other Jyotirlinga sites. Despite belonging to a Muslim family, Khan has often expressed her devotion to Lord Shiva and shared images from her pilgrimages on social media.
According to the reported framework, such visitors would not be barred outright but would be required to submit an affidavit affirming, “I believe in Sanatan Dharma,” as a prerequisite for temple entry and worship.
The development has also elicited reactions from political and film personalities. Actor and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut commented on the matter, stating that belief in Sanatan Dharma is universal and questioned the necessity of formal declarations in writing.
While the temple committee has not officially confirmed all operational details in public domain statements, the reported move has ignited a broader debate on religious access, inclusivity, and administrative control over pilgrimage practices in India.
As the Char Dham Yatra season approaches, clarity from authorities is awaited on whether such a rule will be formally enforced and how it will be implemented on the ground.
