Air conditioner prices in India have started increasing even before the peak summer season begins. Major brands such as LG Electronics and Hitachi have already raised the prices of room air conditioners by around 5–7 percent in March, according to market dealers.
Industry sources say other companies, including Blue Star and Voltas, may also increase prices within the next 3 to 10 days as manufacturers prepare for strong summer demand.
Dealers Increasing Inventory
Dealers have reported that distributors have begun stocking up on air conditioners for the March quarter, anticipating higher demand during the upcoming summer months. The inventory buildup is also linked to expectations that prices may rise further in the coming weeks.
Rising Raw Material Costs Behind the Hike
Manufacturers say the price increase is mainly driven by higher input costs, particularly the rising price of copper, which is widely used in compressors and coils.
Other factors contributing to the hike include:
-
Higher cost of raw materials
-
Weak Indian rupee, increasing the cost of imported components
-
Stricter energy efficiency norms, which require upgraded technology in AC units
These factors have increased overall production costs for manufacturers.
Summer Heat May Push Demand Higher
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal temperatures between March and May, which could significantly boost the demand for air conditioners across the country.
Commenting on the situation, B. Thiagarajan, Managing Director of Blue Star, said that AC prices could increase by 10–15 percent in the coming months due to commodity inflation and regulatory changes.
Consumers May Face Further Price Rise
Industry experts believe that if input costs continue to rise and summer temperatures remain high, AC prices could increase further before the peak cooling season begins.
