Aadhaar-related work is becoming easier as UIDAI expands the services available through its new mobile application. Instead of visiting an Aadhaar centre for every routine update, users can now access several services directly from their smartphones.

UIDAI's official website currently lists mobile-number and address updates, biometric lock/unlock, authentication-history checks, e-Aadhaar download and request tracking among the services available through the Aadhaar app.

What can you update through the Aadhaar app?

The new app brings several Aadhaar services together in one place. After registering and completing the required face authentication, users can access the services available for their Aadhaar account.

These include:

• Updating your mobile number
• Updating your address
• Locking or unlocking Aadhaar biometrics
• Checking Aadhaar authentication history
• Downloading e-Aadhaar
• Tracking update requests
• Sharing Aadhaar-related verifiable credentials
• Sharing a contact card

This can be particularly useful for people who have moved to a new address or changed their mobile number.

You need a smartphone with internet access

To register on the Aadhaar app, users need a compatible Android or iOS smartphone with an internet connection. UIDAI says the app supports Android 9.0 and above and iOS 16.0 and above.

During registration, users enter their Aadhaar number, select the appropriate SIM and complete face authentication before setting a six-digit PIN for accessing the app.

Email update is currently free through the app

There is another useful benefit for Aadhaar holders.

UIDAI has waived the charge for updating an email address through the Aadhaar mobile application until December 31, 2026. This means people who need to add or update their email address can use the app during this period without paying the applicable fee.

You can check who used your Aadhaar

The app also provides access to Aadhaar authentication history.

This can help users check when their Aadhaar was used for authentication and review the available transaction details. If you notice an authentication that you don't recognise, you can investigate it and take appropriate action.

Aadhaar biometrics can be locked

Another useful security feature is biometric locking.

If you don't want your Aadhaar biometrics to be available for authentication all the time, you can use the lock/unlock facility. UIDAI provides this feature as an additional way to protect biometric authentication.

Not every Aadhaar update can be done from home

While the app has expanded digital services, users should not assume that every Aadhaar correction can now be completed online.

Certain services still require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre. UIDAI continues to provide a centre-locator facility for services that need to be completed in person.

Aadhaar update may take some time

If you submit an update request, don't worry if the change does not appear immediately.

UIDAI says an Aadhaar update can take up to 90 days, depending on the type of request and verification process.

Be careful of fake Aadhaar apps

Since Aadhaar contains sensitive personal information, users should download the application only from official app stores and verify that they are using UIDAI's official service.

Never share your Aadhaar OTP, app PIN or other authentication details with an unknown person claiming to help with an update.
