An important development has emerged regarding the Eighth Pay Commission for the country's 6.5 million retired pensioners, including central government employees. The Commission is currently touring various states to hear suggestions and demands from employee organizations, unions, and relevant stakeholders. These discussions have led to several important proposals being presented to the Commission for the benefit of pensioners.
The Eighth Pay Commission, headed by former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, is reviewing the pensions of employees who retired on or before December 31, 2025. Consequently, employee unions have made several demands for changes to the pension structure.
The National Council for Joint Consultative Missionaries (NC-JCM), the Maharashtra Old Pension Organization, and the All India Defense Employees Federation have demanded that the commission resume pensions based on the revised pay. They also demanded the reinstatement of the old pension scheme, the strengthening of the Unified Pension Scheme, and its linkage to dearness allowance (DA/DR).

The unions have demanded that the minimum pension be fixed at 67% of the last salary drawn or the average salary of the last 10 months. They have also demanded changes in the fitment factor, an increase in family pension, an increase in the maximum limit for gratuity, and changes in the rules for pension commutation. The unions have also demanded that retired employees be given the option to choose from OPS, NPS, or UPS schemes.
