Currently, discussions are underway among government employees regarding the Eighth Pay Commission. While this discussion is ongoing, two important issues are the Dearness Allowance (DA) and the Fitment Factor. Many people know that salary increases are based on this. However, there is another formula involved. That formula could be beneficial in increasing employees' salaries.
What is the Family Unit Formula?
The Family Unit Formula is essential for increasing the salaries of central government employees. It determines how much an employee can spend on their family. Currently, at the Eighth Pay Commission meeting, employee organizations are demanding changes to the formula.
Because, according to them, this formula is outdated in today's times. Given rising inflation, the cost of children's education, and the burden of medical expenses, a new formula is needed. Currently, a family is considered to consist of only three units: the expenses of the husband, wife, and one of the children are included.
What are the demands of the employee organizations?
The National Council of Employees (NC-JCM) and other employee organisations are demanding that a family should be considered as 5 units for salary calculation.
As per the proposed formula:
Employee – 1 unit
Spouse – 1 unit
Two children – 0.8 units each (total 1.6 units)
Parents – 0.8 units. This makes it 5.2 units. Employees are demanding that this be rounded up to 5 units.
How much will this affect the salary?
If this demand is accepted, salaries could increase significantly. According to the employee organization, the basic salary for a family of five units would be ₹69,000. The fitment factor could then go up to approximately 3.833. This impacts not only your salary but also various allowances, pensions, and your overall salary package.
