Severe period pain is a common concern for many women. Cramps, fatigue, weakness, mood changes, and heavy bleeding can make menstruation particularly difficult. While several factors can contribute to these symptoms, diet also plays an important role in maintaining overall health during the menstrual cycle.
According to gynecologists, deficiencies of nutrients such as iron and magnesium may contribute to problems such as tiredness, weakness, and increased discomfort during periods. A balanced diet can help ensure that the body gets the nutrients it needs.
Iron-rich foods are important
Women lose blood during menstruation, which means their iron requirements can be significant, particularly when periods are heavy. Low iron levels can contribute to fatigue, weakness, difficulty concentrating, and other symptoms.
To increase iron intake, include foods such as spinach, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, and other legumes. Those who eat meat can also obtain iron from meat and other animal-based foods.
Vitamin C can help the body absorb iron from plant foods more effectively. Pairing iron-rich foods with oranges, lemons, tomatoes, guava, or other vitamin-C-rich foods can therefore be useful.
Don't ignore magnesium
Magnesium is involved in muscle and nerve function. Getting enough magnesium through the diet may be beneficial for overall health and could help some women manage menstrual discomfort.
Good dietary sources include pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, bananas, legumes, whole grains, and dark chocolate with a high cocoa content.
Supplements should not be taken routinely without considering the appropriate dose and whether they are actually needed.
Add omega-3 fatty acids
Menstrual cramps are partly associated with prostaglandins, compounds involved in inflammation and uterine contractions. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory effects and may help some women with menstrual discomfort.
Foods rich in omega-3s include walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and fatty fish such as salmon.
Which eating habits should you avoid?
During periods, relying heavily on ultra-processed foods, excessive sugary foods, very salty snacks, and highly refined carbohydrates may make it harder to maintain a balanced diet. Instead, focus on meals containing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, protein sources, and healthy fats.
Staying hydrated is also important, especially when experiencing fatigue or bloating.
When is period pain a warning sign?
Diet can support menstrual health, but very severe or worsening period pain should not simply be treated as a dietary problem. If pain regularly interferes with daily activities, periods become unusually heavy or irregular, or symptoms suddenly change, consult a gynecologist. Conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, or other gynecological problems can sometimes cause significant menstrual pain.
