Why Cancer Returns Even After Treatment: Insights on Pankaj Dheer’s Battle and Cancer Recurrence

Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, best known for playing Karna in B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharata, passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. Although his cancer was initially treated successfully, it returned later, a phenomenon that is unfortunately common in many cancer patients. Experts explain why relapse occurs and how it can be managed.

Dr. Rohit Kapoor from Max Hospital says cancer recurrence happens because some cancer cells remain hidden in the body even after treatment. These microscopic cells often evade detection in tests and make patients and doctors believe the cancer is gone. Over time, these dormant cells can reactivate and multiply, forming new tumors that cause a relapse.

Dr. Mukesh Nagar of Safdarjung Hospital adds that cancer cells are adaptive and may alter their genetic makeup to resist drugs used in treatments. Patients with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable, as reduced immunity allows these cells to survive and grow. Some cancers, like lung and breast cancer, have a higher tendency to recur.

Regular follow-ups with doctors are crucial to detect any signs of relapse early. Blood tests and screenings every 3 to 6 months help monitor health closely. Patients are advised to consult their doctor promptly if symptoms like sudden weight loss, fatigue, or lumps appear.

Pankaj Dheer’s case highlights the complexity of cancer and the importance of ongoing vigilance even after apparent recovery, reminding patients and caregivers to maintain strong monitoring and health support systems.
