WhatsApp is rolling out a new security feature that aims to help users identify potential scams before starting conversations with unknown contacts. The feature is currently being tested on Android and iOS, and it brings warning alerts that appear when users open a chat initiated from an unsaved phone number.
This update was first spotted by WABetaInfo, which reported that WhatsApp is using an algorithm to detect suspicious patterns related to linking requests and unknown contacts. If the app identifies a potentially risky conversation, users will see a security screen before entering the chat.
Instead of immediately opening the conversation, the alert provides context information to help users determine whether the contact is genuine. This includes the country where the phone number is registered, whether the sender is already saved in the user's contacts, and whether the two users share any common WhatsApp groups.
The warning also highlights common methods used by scammers, including attempts to obtain personal information, passwords, or money. Users can then choose whether they want to continue the conversation or cancel it entirely. WhatsApp does not notify the sender if a user decides not to proceed.
The feature is designed to tackle the growing number of frauds on messaging platforms, ranging from fake job offers and investment scams to phishing attacks and fake identity schemes.
However, the new security measures aren't expected to catch every suspicious conversation. According to the report, warning signs may not appear if the number is already saved in the user's contacts, or if the original contact has changed their phone number or moved to another country.
WhatsApp is currently testing this feature in select regions and plans to expand it to more users in the coming months.
While the extra security layer is intended to help users make more informed decisions before connecting with unknown contacts, WhatsApp continues to advise users not to share sensitive personal or financial information with people they don't know or trust.
