WhatsApp to Introduce Instagram-Like ‘Close Friends’ Feature for Status Updates

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a significant upgrade to its Status feature, aimed at giving users greater control over their privacy. According to recent reports, the messaging platform is developing an Instagram-style ‘Close Friends’ option that will allow users to share status updates exclusively with selected contacts.

The upcoming feature is expected to eliminate the need to manually change privacy settings for each status update. It is currently under testing and may first be released to beta users before becoming available to the wider public.

More Privacy Control for Status Sharing

The Close Friends feature will enable users to post photos, videos, or text updates that are visible only to a chosen group of contacts. At present, WhatsApp requires users to adjust status privacy settings through the app’s menu each time they want to limit visibility. The new option is designed to simplify this process and offer a more private sharing experience.

This move reflects WhatsApp’s continued focus on enhancing user privacy while introducing features familiar to users of other Meta-owned platforms such as Instagram.

Feature Spotted in Beta Version

According to a feature tracker, the Close Friends status option has been identified in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.5.13. While the company has not officially announced a release timeline, WhatsApp typically introduces new features to beta users first before a broader rollout based on feedback.

As a result, the feature is still considered to be in development and may undergo changes before its final release.

How Close Friends Lists Will Work

Reports suggest that users will be able to create and manage their Close Friends list in two ways. One option will be available through the status privacy settings, while another may allow users to edit the list directly from the status screen. Any changes made to the list will apply only to future status updates.

This approach ensures flexibility while reducing repetitive privacy adjustments for individual posts.

Visual Indicators for Close Friends Status

To distinguish private status updates, viewers included in the Close Friends list may see a different-colored ring around the status profile photo. This visual cue will indicate that the update has been shared with a limited audience, similar to Instagram’s Close Friends indicator.

In addition, reports indicate that WhatsApp is also exploring a subscription-based offering that could include premium stickers, themes, and additional chat management features in the future.
