A group of international petitioners from countries including India, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa has filed a lawsuit against Meta in a U.S. court, alleging that the company has misled billions of users about the security of their messages.

The Allegations

The petition claims that WhatsApp’s promise of “end-to-end encryption” is misleading. According to the lawsuit:

Meta further stated that the lawsuit is purely fictional and that it will seek injunctive relief against the attorneys representing the plaintiffs.

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) ensures that a message sent on WhatsApp is digitally locked from the sender to the receiver. Only the devices of the sender and recipient can decode the message. Not even WhatsApp or Meta servers can access the content.
