WhatsApp is reportedly preparing to introduce a new feature that could make it much easier for users to identify which of their contacts are currently active on the messaging platform. According to recent reports, the company is testing a Green Dot indicator that will visually display when a contact is online, eliminating the need to open individual chats to check someone's availability.
The upcoming feature is expected to improve user convenience while maintaining existing privacy controls. Although Meta has not officially announced a release date, the feature has already been spotted during testing and could arrive on both Android and iPhone devices in the near future.
Green Dot Could Instantly Show Active Contacts
At present, WhatsApp users need to open a chat window to see whether a contact is online, provided that person has not hidden their online status. The proposed Green Dot feature aims to simplify this process by displaying a small green indicator next to active contacts.
Reports suggest that the indicator will initially appear on the Contact Info page. When users tap on a person's profile picture and open their contact details, a green dot below the profile photo will indicate that the contact is currently using WhatsApp.
If the indicator is absent, it simply means the contact is not active on the platform at that moment.
This small visual cue is designed to make checking a contact's availability faster and more intuitive.
Future Expansion to Chat List Possible
While the first version of the feature is expected to appear only within the Contact Info section, industry reports indicate that Meta could later expand it to other parts of the application.
Future updates may allow users to see the Green Dot directly in the chat list or conversation screen, making it even easier to identify active contacts without opening additional menus.
Similar online indicators are already available across several Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, where users can quickly identify active friends through a green status icon.
