WhatsApp introduces Username feature, reservations open; now you can chat without revealing your number

WhatsApp is rolling out a major privacy-focused feature that will allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of their mobile numbers. This means you won't need to share your mobile number to chat with anyone. The messaging platform has confirmed that this feature will begin rolling out later this year.

The company shared details about this feature, explaining that phone numbers are personal information, and many users don't want to share them with everyone they communicate with. The new username system is designed to provide a safer and more private way to start a conversation.

Reserve your username now

Before this feature becomes widely available, WhatsApp is allowing users to reserve their favorite usernames. The reservation process is simple and takes just a few moments. Users need to update the app to the latest version, then go to Settings > Account > Usernames to check if their favorite username is available and claim it.

How this feature will work

Once usernames are officially enabled, users will be able to start chats with new contacts without revealing their phone number. Instead, their chosen username will be displayed, making it easier to maintain privacy when chatting with people outside their contact list.

Why is WhatsApp opening reservations now?

With over three billion users worldwide, many usernames are expected to be in high demand. Allowing advance reservations helps reduce the amount of competition for popular names.

Privacy Controls

Unlike some social media platforms, WhatsApp doesn't offer a public username directory. This means people will need to know your real username before they can contact you, adding another layer of privacy.

The platform is also introducing an optional Username Key, a security feature that lets you ensure only people who have your 'key' can message you.

Users will have complete control over this feature, including the ability to change their username at any time, update privacy settings, or disable the username option altogether. This rollout will occur gradually in different countries over the coming months.
