Tech enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for Apple to unveil its first foldable iPhone. While the company has not officially confirmed anything yet, fresh leaks are offering new clues about what could make the upcoming iPhone Fold different from existing foldable phones.
According to a leak shared by user yeux1122 on the Korean platform Naver, Apple may use Liquid Metal for the hinge mechanism of its foldable iPhone, while the main body of the device is expected to be made of titanium.
What exactly is Liquid Metal?
Liquid Metal is an amorphous metal alloy originally developed by researchers at the California Institute of Technology.
Unlike conventional metals such as stainless steel or aluminium, Liquid Metal does not have a crystalline structure. This unique atomic arrangement gives it several advantages:
-
Extremely high strength
-
Resistance to permanent bending
-
Exceptional durability under repeated mechanical stress
-
Lightweight compared to traditional metals
These properties make it especially suitable for components that undergo constant movement.
Why Liquid Metal makes sense for foldable phones
In foldable smartphones, the hinge is the most critical and weakest component. Over time, repeated folding can lead to wear, creases, looseness, or even breakage.
Using traditional materials like stainless steel:
-
Increases weight
-
Limits how thin the device can be
-
May wear out faster over repeated folds
Liquid Metal, on the other hand:
-
Is lighter yet stronger
-
Handles repeated bending far better
-
Helps maintain a slim and premium design
This makes it an ideal candidate for a foldable device that prioritises durability and thinness—something Apple is known for.
Apple’s interest in Liquid Metal
Apple has reportedly explored Liquid Metal in past patents, particularly related to hinges and mechanical parts. If used in the iPhone Fold, the company could patent this hinge design to gain a competitive edge in the foldable smartphone market.
A Liquid Metal hinge could also help Apple reduce the visible crease issue seen in many current foldable phones.
