"We Can't Train for Bumrah": Ben Stokes Admits Defeat Even Before Third Test Begins

After India’s dominant 336-run victory in the Edgbaston Test, England captain Ben Stokes made a startling admission—it’s nearly impossible to prepare for a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah. Even though Bumrah did not feature in the second Test, his expected return in the third Test has already sparked concern within the England camp.

Bumrah’s Shadow Looms Large Despite Absence

Shubman Gill confirmed after the Edgbaston win that Jasprit Bumrah is likely to return for the third Test at Lord’s, starting July 10. This news has visibly rattled England captain Ben Stokes. In the post-match press conference, he quipped, "I thought I would get through this without being asked about Bumrah."

Stokes explained, "We face each other often and know what to expect, and we try to replicate that in training. But you can’t simulate what Bumrah does in a match. Practicing with sidearms doesn’t come close to matching his unique bowling style."

Is Jofra Archer the Answer?

When asked whether Jofra Archer might be included in the playing XI to counter India’s pace attack, Stokes remained non-committal. He said England would assess the conditions and Archer’s fitness before taking a decision.

'We’re Not Panicking,' Says Stokes

Despite the heavy defeat, Stokes urged fans and the media not to overreact. "We’ve had brilliant wins and tough losses too. The key is to stay level-headed. We always knew this was going to be a hard-fought series." He acknowledged the sting of defeat but maintained that England would regroup and focus on bouncing back at Lord’s.
