Varanasi is preparing for a major transformation in its public transportation system with the introduction of India's first public transport ropeway. The ambitious Kashi Ropeway Project aims to provide relief from the city's long-standing traffic congestion, particularly for commuters and tourists travelling between Varanasi Cantt Railway Station and Godaulia Chowk.
Currently, travelling between these two locations can take around 45 minutes or even longer, especially during peak hours. Once operational, the ropeway is expected to reduce the journey time to approximately 15–16 minutes. This will make travelling through some of the city's busiest areas considerably more convenient.
A glimpse of Varanasi's upcoming ropeway
Ahead of its anticipated launch, a content creator recently shared a video on Instagram after getting an opportunity to experience the ropeway. The video offered viewers a glimpse of the cabins, their interiors and the aerial views passengers can expect during the journey.
Each cable car will accommodate multiple passengers and feature a design inspired by the cultural identity of Kashi, including elements associated with the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the city's famous ghats.
The ropeway will travel above crowded roads, railway infrastructure and residential areas, allowing passengers to avoid several traffic-heavy stretches. The video has also attracted attention because of the unique experience of viewing Varanasi from above.
Key highlights of the Kashi Ropeway Project
The Kashi Ropeway Project is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 645 crore. It will cover approximately 4.2 kilometres and is planned to operate with around 220 cable cars, each having a seating capacity of 10 passengers.
The project will feature five stations along its route:
-
Varanasi Cantt
-
Kashi Vidyapeeth
-
Rath Yatra
-
Church
-
Godaulia Chowk
The project involves international and domestic engineering expertise, with Swiss company Bartholet Maschinenbau AG and Indian company Vishwa Samudra Engineering Private Limited associated with its development.
By connecting important locations through an elevated transport system, the ropeway is expected to offer an alternative to conventional road transportation.
Social media users react to the ropeway
The video showcasing the ropeway has generated considerable discussion on social media. Several users appreciated the infrastructure development and expressed excitement about experiencing Varanasi from an entirely different perspective.
One user commented that watching the sunset and rain in Varanasi was a beautiful experience. Another suggested that painting the rooftops in similar colours could further improve the city's appearance.
However, not everyone focused on the transportation benefits. Some users pointed out that exploring Banaras on foot offers a different experience, as walking allows visitors to discover its narrow lanes, temples, local markets and cultural heritage more closely.
Others welcomed the project as a new transportation option that could make commuting easier for residents and tourists.
With its elevated route, multiple stations and planned passenger capacity, the Kashi Ropeway Project is expected to introduce a different way of travelling through Varanasi. It could also provide visitors with a unique aerial view of one of India's most historic cities.
