These days, payments are made everywhere, from tea shops to large malls. It has become the primary method of payment. However, often, if you miss a single digit in a hurry, your hard-earned money ends up in the wrong account. Users always wonder whether money sent via UPI can be withdrawn, just like with WhatsApp or email. Let's explore this in detail.
Is there an 'Undo' button?
In March 2026, there were 22.64 billion UPI transactions in India, which gives an idea of UPI's popularity. But, in this rapid advancement of technology, one question always lingers: If money is accidentally transferred to the wrong UPI ID, is there an 'Undo' button to get it back? It's important to understand that there's no magic button like 'Undo' or 'Ctrl+Z' in UPI apps. It's a one-time, real-time process. As soon as you enter your password and click 'OK', the money is immediately transferred from your account to the other person's account. Even the bank cannot reverse the transaction without the account holder's consent. But this doesn't mean that if money has been transferred to the wrong UPI ID, there's no way to get it back.
What to do if you make a payment to the wrong UPI ID?
When you realize the money has gone to the wrong person, don't panic. First, call or text the number the money was sent to. Most of the time, the person on the other end is honest and will return the money upon speaking. But if they refuse or don't pick up the phone, immediately report the issue to your UPI app and bank. Every banking app has a Report Issue option; using this, you can raise an objection to the transaction.
You can also file a complaint through the BHIM app.
If you don't receive immediate assistance from your bank, visit the NPCL portal, which operates UPI. Submit your complaint in the Dispute Redressal Mechanism section. Submit your transaction ID, date, and screenshot. Alternatively, you can file a complaint directly through the BHIM app. This process gives your case an official status, which the bank cannot ignore.
What to do when the bank doesn't listen?
Sometimes junior bank officers are lax in handling such matters. In such a situation, you shouldn't despair. Contact your bank's nodal officer or grievance redressal department. If you don't receive help within 30 days, you can file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman. The RBI Ombudsman is an effective way to resolve such issues in digital transactions.
Caution is the best option
It's said that 'prevention is better than cure.' Similarly, to avoid these problems with UPI transactions, follow these smart steps:
1 Rupee Test: Before sending a large amount, always send 1 Rupee to ensure that the money is going to the right place.
Use a QR code: To avoid typing mistakes, it's safest to scan a QR code instead of your mobile number. Reconfirm your name: Before entering your PIN, carefully read the receiver's name that appears on the screen.
By using such options, you can avoid any problems that may arise during the transaction.
