Standing in government-office queues for certificates, documents and public services is becoming less necessary as more government services move online. Two platforms that can make everyday government-related work considerably easier are UMANG and DigiLocker.
According to the government, as of July 31, 2026, around 2,575 services from Central and State Governments were available through UMANG. DigiLocker, meanwhile, offered access to more than 5,400 document types and services.
For citizens, this means many routine tasks can be completed digitally without repeatedly visiting government offices.
What is UMANG?
UMANG stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance. It brings a wide range of government services together on one digital platform.
Instead of downloading separate applications or visiting different websites for every service, users can access numerous Central and State Government services through UMANG.
The platform had more than 11.66 crore registered users as of July 2026, according to government data.
What can you use UMANG for?
The services available depend on the department and state, but UMANG can be useful for several everyday government-related tasks.
Citizens can use the platform to access services related to areas such as:
-
Government schemes and benefits
-
Pension-related services
-
Employment services
-
Utility-related services
-
Health services
-
Education
-
Certificates and other public services
-
EPFO-related services
-
Various State Government services
The exact services available to a user can vary depending on the department and location.
What is DigiLocker?
DigiLocker is a digital document wallet that allows citizens to access and store authentic digital documents issued by participating government departments and institutions.
Instead of carrying physical copies of every important document, users can access eligible documents digitally through their DigiLocker account.
As of July 2026, the government said DigiLocker had more than 72.43 crore registered users and offered more than 5,437 document types and services.
Which documents can you find on DigiLocker?
Depending on the issuing authority and eligibility, DigiLocker can provide access to documents such as:
-
Driving licence
-
Vehicle registration documents
-
Educational certificates
-
Mark sheets
-
Government certificates
-
Identity-related documents
-
Other digitally issued records
The availability of a particular document depends on whether the concerned issuing authority has integrated it with DigiLocker.
Why should you use these platforms?
The biggest advantage is convenience.
A person may need a document or government service unexpectedly while travelling, applying for a job, completing admission formalities or dealing with another official process. Having eligible documents available digitally can save time.
Digital access can also reduce dependence on physical paperwork and make it easier to retrieve documents when required.
What about people who don't have easy internet access?
The government has also expanded Common Service Centres (CSCs), which provide digital access to citizens in rural and remote areas.
According to government data, more than 4.07 lakh CSCs were functional at the Gram Panchayat level as of June 30, 2026. These centres provide services covering areas such as government services, banking, insurance, pensions and utility payments.
This makes digital government services more accessible even for people who may not be comfortable completing online processes themselves.
One important thing to remember
Having a document in digital form does not mean every website, organisation or authority will accept every type of digital copy for every purpose. Before submitting a document, check the requirements of the organisation requesting it.
Also, never share your OTP, password, PIN or other confidential account information with another person while accessing these services.
A government office may no longer be your first stop
With thousands of services and documents moving online, platforms such as UMANG and DigiLocker can save citizens considerable time and paperwork.
The next time you need a government document or service, it may be worth checking these platforms first before planning a visit to an office.
