Our daily habits directly impact our wallets. We leave many electronic gadgets we use at night on standby until the next morning. This simple mistake can lead to a spike in our electricity bills. Let's explore these five devices and how much you can save by turning them off.
In today's digital age, our homes are filled with electronic gadgets. Everything from mobile chargers to Wi-Fi routers runs on electricity. But did you know? These devices consume electricity unnecessarily even while you're sleeping and when you wake up in the morning. According to experts, if you completely turn off the following five gadgets as soon as you wake up in the morning, you can save 10 to 15 percent on your electricity bill.
1. Wi-Fi Router
We use the internet all night, but when we leave for work or office in the morning, the router remains on. While the router may seem to consume less power, leaving it on 24 hours a day adds up to a monthly consumption. Turning off the router in the morning when it's not needed not only extends the device's life but also saves energy.
2. Geyser or Water Heater
We turn on the geyser in the morning to take a bath. Often, the button remains on even after the water is heated. Although the geyser has an auto-cut feature, it draws power to reheat the water when it cools down. Therefore, it's best to unplug it after use.
3. TV and set-top box on 'standby' mode
Many people have the habit of simply turning off the TV with the remote, leaving the main button on. This is called a 'phantom load'. A TV turned off with the remote is actually consuming electricity. Turning off the main switch as soon as you wake up in the morning can save a lot of energy.
4. Laptop and Mobile Chargers
Even after charging your mobile or laptop, we often leave the charger plugged into the socket with the button on. The transformer in the charger continues to draw a small amount of power. This is called leakage current. For safety reasons, it's a good idea to remove all chargers in the morning.
5. Air purifiers or humidifiers
We use these devices to sleep comfortably at night. Once we open the windows in the morning, we don't need them. However, if they're left on, they not only waste electricity but also wear out their filters more quickly.
