Amid evolving global security challenges and shifting relations with neighbouring countries, India has taken another step towards strengthening its defence preparedness. The Ministry of Defence has released the Technology Perspective and Capability Roadmap (TPCR-2025), a document that outlines the technological and capability requirements of the Indian armed forces for the next 15 years.
Third Edition of TPCR
This is the third edition of the roadmap—the earlier ones were issued in 2013 and 2018. The TPCR-2025 details future requirements for the Army, Air Force, Navy, as well as joint-service technologies, offering a long-term vision of the country’s defence needs.
Focus on Emerging Technologies
Defence experts highlight that the roadmap emphasizes advanced domains such as:
-
Cyber operations
-
Drone and unmanned systems
-
Artificial intelligence
-
Space warfare
-
Information dominance
The aim is to ensure Indian industries align their research, development, and production efforts in line with the armed forces’ needs, enabling timely capacity building.
Boost to Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat
The government has given clear priority to Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan in the defence sector. Both public and private industries, including MSMEs, are being encouraged to participate in the development and production of defence technologies.
A Step Towards Modernisation and Indigenisation
While TPCR-2025 provides the broad vision, it does not go into subsystem or component-level details. Such specifics will be addressed later through Requests for Proposal (RFP) and Requests for Information (RFI).
According to the Defence Ministry, the roadmap is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving the dual goals of modernisation and indigenisation. By equipping the armed forces with next-generation technologies, TPCR-2025 seeks to ensure that India is prepared to meet future security challenges through indigenous solutions.
