In Indian cinema, actors playing double or even multiple roles is nothing new. Over the years, audiences have seen several such experiments, some successful and some forgettable. However, there was one exceptional performance that left viewers stunned and is still remembered today. The actress not only showcased her incredible range but also achieved something truly rare—she portrayed both the wife and the daughter of Amitabh Bachchan in the same film.
The film in question is Khuda Gawah, a grand period drama that starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. The legendary actress Sridevi played a powerful double role in the film, appearing as Benazir and Mehndi. Through these two characters, she convincingly portrayed both Amitabh Bachchan’s wife and his daughter, earning widespread praise for her versatility and screen presence.
Released with music composed by the iconic duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Khuda Gawah was one of the most expensive Indian films of its time, made on a budget of around ₹5.7 crore. Upon its release, the film was a massive success, becoming the third highest-grossing film of the year worldwide. It also made history by being the first Indian film to use surround sound, a feat that earned it a place in the Limca Book of Records.
According to reports, Khuda Gawah enjoyed extraordinary popularity abroad as well, especially in Afghanistan, where it reportedly ran to packed houses in Kabul for nearly ten weeks. The film went on to earn approximately ₹17 crore globally and later reached a wider audience through a Telugu-dubbed version.
At the 38th Filmfare Awards, Khuda Gawah received nine nominations and won four awards, further cementing its legacy. Even today, the film is remembered not just for its scale and storytelling, but for Sridevi’s remarkable performance—one that proved why she remains one of Indian cinema’s most iconic actresses.
