The government is soon going to shut down the mAadhaar app. Learn about the features of the new Aadhaar app and how to set it up from home.
If you use the mAadhaar app, this news is useful. The government has announced that the old app will soon be discontinued. It will be replaced by a new Aadhaar app, which is being described as more secure, smarter, and easier than before. UIDAI shared this information on the social media platform X, urging people to switch to the new app. UIDAI stated that the new app will provide users with faster access, better features, and easier digital services. This change comes at a time when public concerns about digital security and data privacy are growing.
How different is the new Aadhaar App from the old one?
The new Aadhaar app isn't just a redesign of the old mAadhaar, it also completely changes how it works. Previously, Aadhaar verification often revealed all the details, but now users will be able to share only the necessary information. UIDAI says this will keep people's personal information more secure. The new app will operate on selective data sharing, meaning only the necessary information will be displayed. This will make proving identity at hotels, hospitals, government offices, and other locations safer and easier than ever before.
New features like QR and Face Authentication
The new Aadhaar app incorporates several advanced features. The most significant change is QR code-based Aadhaar sharing. Now, there's no need to provide your full Aadhaar number to prove your identity. Users will be able to share only essential details through a QR scan. Instead of relying solely on OTP, additional security features like face authentication and QR verification have been introduced. UIDAI believes this will prevent misuse of Aadhaar. Additionally, users will now be able to lock or manage their fingerprint, face, and iris data directly from the app, further strengthening biometric security.
How to setup the new Aadhaar App
The process for activating the new Aadhaar app is slightly different and more secure than the old app. First, users must download the Aadhaar app from an official app store, such as the Play Store. They must then select their preferred language and enter their Aadhaar-linked mobile number for OTP verification. Some users may also need to complete face authentication, set a PIN, or enable a biometric lock. The process will then be completed by adding the Aadhaar number and completing another OTP verification. UIDAI states that this multi-layered system will make user identification more secure.
Free Aadhaar update service has also been extended.
With the announcement of the new app, UIDAI has provided further relief to the public. The free online Aadhaar document update facility will now continue until June 14, 2027. Previously, this facility was free until June 15, 2026. This means that people will now be able to visit the myAadhaar portal and update their identity and address documents free of charge. The government believes that the new Aadhaar app will simplify people's digital experience and strengthen security.
