T20 World Cup 2026: The Indian team's joy turned to mourning midway through the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. While Indian fans were celebrating Team India's success in the Super 8 (T20 World Cup), the passing of a legendary player turned this joy into mourning.
The tragedy occurred on Thursday while two teams were playing cricket. Little did anyone know that this match would prove to be the last of a cricket legend's life. Even the spectators who had come to watch the match couldn't help but shed tears.
The legend passed away amid the T20 World Cup
While the Indian senior cricket team is participating in the T20 World Cup 2026, an Under-13 domestic cricket league match was being played in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
During this match, the young players and umpires on the field were suddenly attacked by bees, resulting in the death of 65-year-old umpire Manik Gupta. The swarm of bees stung Manik Gupta for approximately 10 minutes, and by the time rescue teams arrived at the hospital, Manik had already passed away.
Young player also seriously injured
While Manik Gupta lost his life in the bee attack, his fellow umpire Jagdish Sharma and several other young cricketers were also seriously injured. The match was being played at the Sapru Ground in Shuklaganj, Unnao, as part of the KDMA League, and Manik Gupta and Jagdish Sharma were officiating.
When the bees attacked the field, the umpires were wearing white clothes, due to which the bees kept hovering around them and ultimately they took the life of Manik Gupta.
He was admitted to the nearest hospital
The injured players and umpires in the match being played between YMCC vs Paramount were immediately taken to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Shuklaganj and later to Lakshmipat Singhania Institute in Kanpur, but there the doctors declared Manik Gupta dead.
It should be noted that Manik Gupta was a longtime umpire with the Kanpur Cricket Association and had been serving there for a long time. The Kanpur Cricket Association expressed condolences on Manik's passing, stating that senior KCA umpire Manik Gupta was completely dedicated to the game. The KCA family stands with his family in this time of grief and will provide all possible assistance.
