Tata Sierra Test Drive Accident: SUV Falls Into 20-Foot Pit in Thane, Passengers Survive

A shocking accident involving the Tata Sierra occurred during a test drive in Thane, Maharashtra, when the SUV reportedly lost control and plunged into a 20-foot-deep pit at a construction site.

The incident took place in the Panchpakhadi area shortly after the vehicle had left a dealership showroom for a test drive.

How the Accident Happened

According to reports, a woman who was driving the car during the test drive allegedly lost control at high speed. Before falling into the pit, the SUV collided with an auto-rickshaw and two motorcycles on the road.

The vehicle also broke through barricades at the construction site before plunging into the ditch, leaving three people injured.

At the time of the accident, there were three occupants inside the vehicle:

  • The woman driving the car

  • One of her relatives

  • A dealership employee accompanying the test drive

Rescue teams from the Thane Municipal Corporation Disaster Management Cell quickly reached the spot and rescued all three passengers. They were later taken to hospital for treatment.

Safety Features May Have Prevented Major Casualties

Reports suggest that the airbags deployed during the crash, which likely helped prevent serious injuries to the passengers. The SUV’s high-strength steel body also reportedly remained largely intact despite the severe fall.

The Tata Sierra comes equipped with several safety technologies, including:

  • Six airbags

  • Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)

  • Electronic Stability Control

  • Hill Hold Control

  • Hill Descent Control

  • 360-degree camera

Experts believe that the ADAS system may not have intervened during the accident because the vehicle reportedly did not apply brakes before the collision.

Tata Sierra Price and Engine Options

The Tata Sierra, manufactured by Tata Motors, is priced from around ₹11.49 lakh (ex-showroom) in India.

The SUV is offered with multiple engine options:

  • 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 160 hp

  • Transmission options include 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic

  • A 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 118 hp, paired with 6-speed manual or automatic transmission

The incident has sparked discussions about vehicle safety features, as the SUV’s strong structure and airbags are believed to have played a key role in preventing a more serious outcome.
