Summer conditions in India can be harsh on vehicles, with temperatures often crossing 40°C. Prolonged exposure to heat can affect key components such as the engine, tires, and battery, increasing the risk of breakdowns during long trips. Proper maintenance and a few precautions can help ensure a smooth and trouble-free journey.
Maintain the Coolant System
The engine cooling system works harder during summer, making it essential to keep the coolant at the correct level. Low or degraded coolant can cause overheating and serious engine damage. It is also important to inspect the radiator and hoses for any leaks or wear.
Check Tire Pressure Regularly
High temperatures cause the air inside tires to expand, which can increase pressure and raise the risk of a blowout. Ensure that tire pressure is maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Additionally, inspect tires for cuts, cracks, or excessive wear before heading out on a long drive.
Monitor Battery Health
Heat can accelerate battery wear by affecting the internal fluid, reducing its lifespan. Keep the battery terminals clean and corrosion-free. If the battery is over two to three years old, it is advisable to have it tested to avoid unexpected failure.
Protect the Car Interior
Continuous exposure to sunlight can damage the dashboard, seats, and other interior components. Using sunshades, parking in shaded areas, and installing seat covers can help protect the interior and keep the cabin temperature lower.
Ensure Proper AC Functioning
A well-functioning air conditioning system is crucial for comfort during summer drives. If you notice reduced cooling, unusual odors, or weak airflow, get the AC system checked. Regular servicing, including cleaning or replacing the cabin filter and maintaining proper refrigerant levels, is essential.
Drive Smart, Stay Prepared
Regular checks and timely maintenance can prevent minor issues from turning into major problems. Taking these precautions not only enhances vehicle performance but also ensures safety and comfort during long summer journeys.
