Sending an email to the wrong person, attaching the wrong file, or forgetting to include important information can happen to anyone. Whether it's a work email, an important document, or a personal message, such mistakes can be stressful. Fortunately, Gmail offers a handy feature that gives you a short window to stop an email from being sent.
Gmail's 'Undo Send' Feature Can Save You
Gmail includes an Undo Send feature that lets you cancel a sent email within a few seconds. Instead of sending the email instantly, Gmail briefly delays delivery. During this short period, an Undo button appears on the screen, allowing you to stop the email before it is sent.
If you click Undo within the selected time limit, the email returns to the draft window, where you can edit or delete it before sending it again.
How Does Undo Send Work?
When you press the Send button, Gmail waits for a few seconds before actually delivering the message. If you choose Undo during that delay, the email is not sent and reopens as a draft.
This feature is especially useful for correcting typing mistakes, adding forgotten attachments, changing recipients, or making last-minute edits.
How to Change the Undo Send Time Limit
You can customize how long Gmail waits before sending your emails.
Here's how:
-
Open Gmail on your computer.
-
Click the Settings (gear) icon.
-
Select See all settings.
-
Under the General tab, find Undo Send.
-
Choose a cancellation period of 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds.
-
Scroll down and click Save Changes.
Choosing the 30-second option gives you the maximum time to review your email after pressing Send.
Undo Send Works on Mobile Too
The Gmail mobile app also supports this feature. After sending an email, an Undo option appears briefly at the bottom of the screen. Simply tap it within the available time to stop the email and return it to your drafts.
Things to Remember
The Undo Send feature works only during the cancellation period you have selected. Once that time expires, the email is sent and cannot be recalled using this feature.
For this reason, it's always a good habit to double-check the recipient's address, subject line, message, and attachments before clicking Send. Combining careful review with Gmail's Undo Send option can help you avoid many common email mistakes.
