In today's digital age, mobile numbers aren't just limited to phone calls or the internet, but have become the foundation of many essential services like banking, UPI, and social media. Therefore, having a SIM card active in your name that you never purchased could lead to significant problems or even cyber fraud.

To mitigate this security risk, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) launched the Sanchar Saathi portal. The 'Know Mobile Connections in Your Name' feature on this platform allows any citizen to find out how many mobile connections are registered in their name.

How to use the portal and report an unknown number?

Visit the website: Visit the Sancharsaathi (sancharsaathi.gov.in) portal.

OTP Verification: Enter your active mobile number and login via OTP.

Check the list: Once the verification is complete, a list of all the mobile numbers registered in your name will appear on the screen.

If you see a number listed that you haven't used or no longer need, you can report it by selecting 'Not My Number' or 'Not Required' on the portal. Following your complaint, the DoT and the relevant telecom company investigate and disconnect the fraudulent connection. The DoT is using AI and data analytics to achieve this.

Rules to keep in mind:

SIM Limit: As per the rules, a person can have a maximum of 9 mobile connections in his/her name (6 connections in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North Eastern states).

Caution: It is not illegal to have a 9 number, but it is extremely important to report an unknown number immediately.
