Delhi Police arrested wanted criminal Avinash alias Janu, who was carrying a reward of ₹50,000, following an encounter in the Tundla area of Firozabad on Friday. The arrest came after the accused opened fire on the police team during an operation to apprehend him.

According to officials, the Delhi Police team had surrounded the accused in Tundla when Avinash, realizing he was cornered, pulled out a pistol and fired directly at IPS officer Melvin Varghese and Inspector Ramkumar with the intent to kill. Both officers were hit in the chest, but their bulletproof vests prevented serious injury.

The police retaliated in self-defense, firing at the accused and injuring him in both legs. He was subsequently overpowered and taken into custody.

Snatched Service Weapon Before Fleeing

Avinash alias Janu, a resident of Malviya Nagar, Delhi, had earlier attacked a beat constable in Safdarjung Enclave on January 22 and fled after snatching the policeman’s official pistol. Following the incident, Delhi Police tracked his movements through surveillance and traced his location to Tundla in Firozabad, where he was finally arrested.

Further investigation is underway.
