Royal Enfield appears to have underestimated the demand for its new Himalayan 440. The adventure motorcycle has reportedly received such a strong response that the company has temporarily stopped accepting new bookings.
According to Royal Enfield, customer orders have already covered roughly the next six months of production. The company is now focusing on increasing production capacity so that existing customers can receive their motorcycles within a reasonable timeframe.
New bookings are expected to reopen once production catches up with demand. Customers who have already booked the motorcycle will be updated regarding their expected delivery schedules.
Himalayan 440 arrives during a milestone year
The Himalayan 440 was unveiled at Royal Enfield's Himalayan Base Camp event in Ladakh earlier this month. The company says the response to the motorcycle has been significantly stronger than its initial expectations.
The timing is also significant for the Himalayan family, which is completing 10 years in the market. What began as an adventure-focused motorcycle has grown into one of Royal Enfield's most recognizable product lines.
Royal Enfield says the Himalayan family has crossed 3.2 lakh units in global sales, combining the earlier Himalayan 411 and the newer Himalayan 450.
The Himalayan 450 has also crossed the 1 lakh global sales mark and has become a strong performer in the adventure motorcycle category in markets including India and Brazil.
What makes the Himalayan 440 different?
The Himalayan 440 is positioned separately from the more premium Himalayan 450. Its design retains the classic adventure-bike appearance, with a round headlamp, tall windscreen and upright riding position.
The motorcycle gets a 21-inch spoke wheel at the front and a 17-inch spoke wheel at the rear. It has an 800 mm seat height, 220 mm ground clearance and a 15-litre fuel tank.
The motorcycle weighs around 199 kg with fuel and oil, making it a substantial machine while still being designed for both everyday riding and adventure touring.
443cc engine with a 6-speed gearbox
Power comes from a 443cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine producing 25.4 bhp and 34 Nm of torque. Royal Enfield says the figures represent an improvement over the older Himalayan 411, with approximately 4.5% more power and 6.5% more torque.
The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox. Its strong low- and mid-range torque is intended to make the motorcycle suitable for city riding as well as longer journeys.
The claimed top speed is around 120 kmph, although cruising at approximately 100 kmph is expected to be more comfortable. During testing, fuel efficiency was around 30 kmpl.
Features focus on practicality
The Himalayan 440 gets LED lighting, a digital-analogue instrument cluster, Royal Enfield's Tripper navigation system and a USB Type-C charging port.
However, its equipment list is simpler than the Himalayan 450. Features such as a full-colour TFT display, riding modes and traction control are not offered.
This simpler approach also helps distinguish the Himalayan 440 as a more accessible option within Royal Enfield's adventure-bike lineup.
Himalayan 440 price in India
The Royal Enfield Himalayan 440 is priced from ₹2.29 lakh (ex-showroom).
With bookings temporarily paused due to strong demand, the motorcycle's next major update will likely be when Royal Enfield announces when fresh bookings will reopen.
For buyers interested in the Himalayan 440, the current booking pause could mean that waiting periods remain an important factor when planning a purchase.
