She states that the park should be closed by 8 pm and warns that if any criminal activity occurs, those present in the park would be held responsible. Who Is the Foreign Citizen Involved?
Speaking to the media on condition of anonymity due to safety concerns, the foreign national said he came to India around 12 years ago in search of better opportunities. He joined a football academy and later began coaching children in local parks.
He explained that after the academy shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, he resumed coaching independently, focusing especially on underprivileged children. Since 2022, he has been selecting talented but economically weaker children, providing them with jerseys and helping them participate in competitions.
According to him, several of the children he trained have gone on to join the armed forces and police services, which he described as one of his proudest achievements.

The football coach said the incident occurred on December 13, when he was casually playing football in the park with Indian friends. Initially, he thought the councillor’s comments were made in jest.
“At first, I thought she was joking. She seemed like a decent woman,” he said. “But she kept repeating the same thing again and again.”
He admitted that the confrontation deeply disturbed him. “I am scared. If this continues, I may have to leave India soon,” he said, adding that the incident made him fear for his safety and future in the country he has lived in for over a decade.
Renu Chaudhary’s Response to the Controversy
Responding to the backlash, Renu Chaudhary defended her actions, claiming that the public park was being used for commercial coaching activities without proper permission from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and without paying any fees.
She stated that the coaching sessions did not follow fixed timings and that MCD staff had repeatedly tried to communicate with the coach but faced difficulties due to the language barrier. According to her, she had raised this issue with the coach nearly eight months ago, advising him to learn Hindi so he could communicate with sanitation workers and other staff, many of whom do not understand English or other languages.
Chaudhary further said that although the space is a playground, MCD needs to be informed whenever it is used regularly. As a councillor, she claimed her intention was to ensure safety, cleanliness, and proper regulation of the park.
Public Reaction: Language Debate Takes Center Stage
The viral video has fueled a broader discussion on language sensitivity in India. Many residents and social media users have criticized the councillor’s approach, arguing that learning a local language should not be enforced through intimidation.
Sarthak Garg, a resident of Mayur Vihar Phase 1, pointed out the irony in the situation. He said Indians often do not reflect on their own behavior when living in other states.
“People should spend time in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, or Maharashtra and see how many Hindi-speaking migrants have lived there for decades without learning the local language,” he said. “Before asking a foreigner to learn Hindi, Indians should ask themselves whether they make any effort to learn Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Bengali, or Marathi.”
