Renault is preparing for a major expansion of its SUV portfolio in India as demand for sport utility vehicles continues to rise. The French automaker is expected to introduce several new SUVs over the coming years, with hybrid technology likely to play a key role in its strategy.
The upcoming lineup could include the next-generation Renault Duster, a larger three-row 7-seater SUV and additional hybrid models aimed at different segments.
Hybrid vehicles combine a petrol engine with one or more electric motors. This setup can improve fuel efficiency and reduce petrol consumption while offering customers an alternative to switching directly to a fully electric vehicle.
New Duster Hybrid Could Lead Renault's Strategy
The next-generation Renault Duster is expected to be one of the most important launches in Renault's India plans.
The SUV is likely to be based on the Renault Group Modular Platform (RGMP), which has been designed to accommodate different powertrain options, including petrol and hybrid systems.
According to reports, the India-spec Duster could get a 1.8-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with two electric motors. One electric motor could assist the engine, while the second would be responsible for driving the wheels.
The hybrid system is also expected to feature a 1.4kWh battery. Reported figures suggest the setup could produce around 160hp and 172Nm of torque.
If these specifications make it into the production model, the Duster could emerge as one of the more powerful hybrid SUVs in its segment.
Bigger 7-Seater SUV Will Follow the Duster
Renault is also working on a larger SUV designed to sit above the Duster.
The upcoming model is expected to feature three rows of seats, making it a more practical option for larger families. It could also use the RGMP platform and share several components and technologies with the new Duster.
The India-spec name has not yet been confirmed. However, names such as Boreal and Bigster have been discussed in connection with Renault's future SUV plans.
The larger SUV could also use the Duster's 1.8-litre strong-hybrid powertrain, with expected output of around 160hp and 172Nm.
Renault Could Bring More Hybrid SUVs
Renault's electrification strategy in India is not expected to end with the Duster and its larger 7-seater sibling.
The company is reportedly working on additional SUVs aimed at different segments as it looks to strengthen its position in the Indian market.
One of the upcoming models could be the Renault Bridger, which is expected to arrive in India around 2027. A hybrid version could follow around 2028-29.
Reports suggest that this model could use a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol-hybrid powertrain, giving Renault another hybrid offering in a different SUV segment.
Renault's SUV Strategy Is Taking Shape
With Indian buyers increasingly showing interest in SUVs and more efficient powertrains, Renault appears to be preparing a broader product strategy centred around both trends.
The new Duster could be the starting point, followed by a larger 7-seater SUV and additional hybrid models in the years ahead.
If Renault manages to price these vehicles competitively and localise their production, the upcoming lineup could put the company in stronger competition with established players such as Hyundai and Toyota in India's growing SUV and hybrid market.
