Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has described the draft social security rules issued for gig workers and delivery partners as a significant achievement. He praised the government for this decision, saying that while this decision may seem small, it represents a necessary and positive beginning for the millions of workers engaged in the gig economy.
Raghav Chadha, responding on social media, congratulated gig workers and said that now a step has been taken towards formal recognition of their work. He said that for a long time, gig workers have been working without any social security, and now there is hope for change.
Chadha said that while many platform companies previously ignored the concerns of these workers, the government's initiative has now begun the process of providing them with protection and respect. He called this a small but significant victory.
Will be eligible for social security benefits
Under the draft rules, gig workers will be granted official identification, allowing them to access social security schemes. According to the proposed rules, if a gig worker works with a single platform for a minimum period of time in a financial year, they will be eligible for social security benefits.
For workers working on more than one platform, eligibility has also been fixed on the basis of total working period.
What will be the benefits to gig workers?
Once implemented, gig workers are expected to be linked to identity cards and unique accounts. They could also benefit from life insurance, accident insurance, and health benefits. In the future, this could also open the door to pension schemes through social security funds.
This initiative will assure economic security and stability to workers engaged in food delivery, cab services, and other digital platforms, and will also bring them out of the unorganized category and into a protected workforce.
A vital part of the modern economy
Raghav Chadha said that gig workers are a vital part of the modern economy and their rights should not be ignored. He expressed hope that these regulations will be further strengthened in the future to provide real and lasting benefits to workers.
