If you own a car or bike, keeping your Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate valid is just as important as carrying your driving licence or insurance. The certificate confirms that your vehicle's emissions are within the prescribed limits. Driving without a valid PUC can lead to hefty fines and other legal consequences.
Can You Drive After Your PUC Certificate Expires?
Under the Motor Vehicles Act, there is no grace period once a PUC certificate expires. The moment its validity ends, driving the vehicle without renewing the certificate is considered a violation of the law. Vehicle owners are advised to renew the PUC before the expiry date to avoid penalties.
What Fine Can You Face?
If you're caught driving without a valid PUC certificate, you may face:
- A fine ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹10,000
- Higher penalties for repeat offences
- Suspension of your driving licence for up to three months in certain cases
Government Considering New PUC Rules
The government is reportedly working on a new PUCC 3.0 system aimed at simplifying compliance for cleaner vehicles while tightening checks on older, more polluting vehicles.
Relief for BS-VI Vehicles
If the proposal is approved, BS-VI private vehicles purchased after April 1, 2020, could receive a longer PUC validity period, reducing the frequency of renewals.
Stricter Rules for Older Vehicles
The proposed changes may require:
- BS-IV vehicles (manufactured before March 2020): PUC renewal every 6 months
- BS-I, BS-II, and BS-III vehicles: PUC renewal every 3 months
The move aims to improve pollution monitoring for older vehicles.
Commercial Vehicles May Also See Changes
The proposal also suggests extending the PUC validity of BS-VI commercial vehicles up to six years old to two years, with inspection frequency increasing as the vehicle ages.
Renew Your PUC on Time
If your PUC certificate is nearing expiry, renewing it promptly can help you avoid fines, legal issues, and unnecessary inconvenience. Maintaining a valid PUC not only keeps you compliant with the law but also contributes to reducing vehicle pollution and protecting the environment.
