A massive explosion rocked the Dedicated Freight Corridor near Khanpur Gates in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, on Friday night around 11 p.m., just two days before Republic Day. The blast destroyed approximately 12 feet of railway track and severely damaged the engine of a passing freight train. Anil Sharma, the train’s security officer, sustained minor injuries but has since been discharged. Fortunately, no passenger trains were on the route at the time, preventing a potential catastrophe.
Authorities suspect that a powerful explosive, possibly RDX, may have been used in the attack. Police and forensic teams (FSL) are investigating whether the explosion was part of a larger conspiracy or an isolated attempt to target the rail network. Evidence is being collected from the site to determine the exact nature of the explosive.
Senior district officials and police responded swiftly, increasing security in the area and beginning repairs on the track to resume freight operations as quickly as possible. The incident caused widespread panic in the Sirhind region, coming just before Republic Day, and a search is underway for the perpetrators. The administration has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety and prevent similar incidents.
