The PM Vishwakarma Yojana is one of the Central Government's flagship schemes aimed at supporting traditional artisans and craftspeople across India. The initiative is designed to help workers improve their skills, modernise their businesses, and increase their income through financial assistance, training, and access to affordable credit.
The scheme covers people engaged in traditional occupations such as carpentry, blacksmithing, goldsmithing, pottery, tailoring, masonry, locksmith work, cobbling, barbering, boat making, basket weaving, toy making, and several other recognised trades. By providing both financial and skill-based support, the government aims to strengthen India's traditional craftsmanship while creating better livelihood opportunities.
One of the biggest benefits of the scheme is free skill training. Beneficiaries receive basic and advanced training to upgrade their skills and learn modern techniques relevant to their profession. During the training period, eligible participants are also provided with a daily stipend, helping them continue learning without losing their source of income.
After successfully completing the training, beneficiaries become eligible for tool kit support through an e-voucher, enabling them to purchase modern equipment required for their trade. Better tools can improve productivity, enhance the quality of work, and help artisans compete in today's market.
The scheme also offers collateral-free business loans in two stages. Eligible beneficiaries can first avail of a loan of up to ₹1 lakh. After timely repayment and meeting the prescribed conditions, they may become eligible for a second loan of up to ₹2 lakh at a concessional interest rate. This financial support can be used to expand businesses, purchase equipment, or increase production capacity.
Applicants must belong to one of the notified traditional trades under the scheme and meet the eligibility conditions prescribed by the government. The scheme is primarily intended for individuals engaged in these occupations and is not available for large businesses or manufacturing units.
To apply, eligible individuals can register through a Common Service Centre (CSC) or visit the official PM Vishwakarma portal. During the application process, applicants need to provide identity proof, Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and other required documents for verification. After successful verification by the concerned authorities, eligible applicants can access the scheme's benefits.
Before applying, applicants should ensure that all details submitted are accurate and that their bank account is linked with Aadhaar wherever required to avoid delays in receiving financial benefits.
The PM Vishwakarma Yojana is more than just a financial assistance programme—it is an effort to preserve India's traditional occupations while helping artisans embrace modern technology and improve their livelihoods. For thousands of skilled workers across the country, the scheme offers an opportunity to strengthen their businesses and secure a more stable future.
