If you tend to carry excess luggage while traveling by train, be cautious now. The railway is enforcing stricter new baggage regulations for passengers. Carrying luggage that exceeds the permissible limit will directly impact your wallet.

If you travel by train and often carry more luggage than you need, then this news is extremely important for you. Now, the Railways has clarified that passengers will have to pay an additional fee if they carry more than the prescribed luggage limit during their train journey. This means that baggage rules will now become more stringent for rail travel, just like they are for air travel.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav shared this important information in response to a question in the Lok Sabha. Responding to a question regarding the luggage limit for train travel, the Minister explained that passengers already have a fixed free baggage allowance based on their class, and that carrying more than that amount is subject to a charge.

There is a fixed luggage limit

Regarding airlines, free baggage allowance limits vary by airline and flight route. Domestic flights typically allow up to 15 kg of checked-in baggage and a 7 kg handbag, while international flights allow up to 23 to 25 kg, or two bags (each weighing 23 kg). According to railway regulations, each passenger is allowed free baggage up to a certain weight, depending on their travel class. Furthermore, there is a maximum limit, within which baggage allowance is available for a fee. However, carrying more than this is considered a violation of the rules.

Rules for second class and sleeper passengers

Second-class passengers are allowed to carry up to 35 kg of luggage free of charge. Passengers carrying more than this amount can carry up to 70 kg, but they will be charged a fee. Sleeper class passengers, however, have a slightly higher free allowance. They can carry up to 40 kg of luggage without any additional charge. If necessary, they can carry up to 80 kg of luggage, but this will also incur an additional charge.

More strictness in AC and chair car

If you travel in AC 3-tier or chair car, the rules are even stricter. Passengers in these classes are allowed to carry only 40 kg of luggage, which is the maximum limit. This means that carrying more than this weight in AC coaches is not acceptable under the rules.

The Railways maintains that excess luggage not only hinders passenger comfort but also creates safety and sanitation issues. Heavy luggage hampers coach movement and increases the risk of accidents. Therefore, the Railways is now emphasizing strict enforcement of baggage rules.
