A sudden spike in chickenpox cases has been reported in Kerala’s Kollam district, with over 100 confirmed infections in recent days. The local health department has stepped up surveillance in schools, colleges, and densely populated areas, as the virus continues to spread quickly.

Doctors have expressed concern that this time, the infection is not limited to children — young adults and pregnant women are also being affected. Given the rising number of cases, authorities have set up special isolation wards in hospitals to manage patients and prevent further transmission.

What Is Chickenpox and How It Spreads

Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV). It spreads through airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing, as well as through direct contact with the blisters of an infected person.

Early symptoms include fever, headache, body ache, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Within two to three days, red rashes and fluid-filled blisters appear on the body, which later crust over.

While chickenpox is usually mild in children, doctors warn that it can be severe in pregnant women and people with weak immune systems.

Why the Sudden Surge in Kollam?

According to Dr. L.H. Ghotekar of Lady Hardinge Hospital, the outbreak in Kollam is linked to changing weather conditions and high humidity, which create an ideal environment for the virus to spread.

He explains that in crowded places like schools, hostels, and public gatherings, the virus can easily pass from one infected person to several others.
Many people also ignore early symptoms and continue to attend work or school, unknowingly spreading the infection further.

Another major factor is that the chickenpox vaccine is not part of Kerala’s government immunization program, leaving many residents unprotected. This has made it harder to contain the spread.

The state health department has now launched awareness drives and active surveillance teams in affected areas to monitor and control the outbreak.

How to Prevent Chickenpox

Health experts recommend the following preventive steps to stay safe:
