New PNG Gas Scheme From September 1: What It Means for Households With a Piped Gas Connection

The government has announced a new incentive scheme aimed at increasing the number of active Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections in Indian households. The scheme will come into effect from September 1, 2026, and is designed to encourage gas distribution companies to activate unused connections and expand their networks.

For households that already have a PNG meter but are not using the connection, the new initiative could be particularly relevant.

Why Has the Government Introduced This Scheme?

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, India currently has around 1.74 crore domestic PNG connections.

However, not every installed connection is actively being used. The new scheme is intended to encourage City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies to convert unbilled or inactive connections into working connections and expand PNG availability to additional areas.

What Is the Benefit of PNG for Households?

Unlike LPG cylinders, PNG is delivered directly to a home through a pipeline.

This means households using an active PNG connection don't have to arrange regular cylinder deliveries or store LPG cylinders at home. The government describes PNG as a cleaner and convenient cooking-fuel option for households.

Already Have a PNG Meter? Check Your Connection

If a PNG meter was installed at your home but you have never started using it, you may want to contact your local gas distributor.

The new scheme specifically encourages distributors to activate such unused connections. This does not mean every inactive connection will automatically become operational or that households will receive free gas.

Customers should check the applicable activation charges, security deposit, gas tariff and other terms with their authorised distributor before starting the connection.

Will PNG Become Available in More Areas?

The scheme is also intended to encourage CGD companies to expand their PNG networks into new areas.

This could gradually make piped cooking gas available to more households, particularly in areas where pipeline infrastructure is being developed.

However, actual availability will depend on whether a PNG network has been established in a particular locality.

Does the Scheme Give Direct Cash Benefits to Consumers?

No. The government's incentive is primarily aimed at City Gas Distribution companies rather than providing a direct cash payment to individual households.

The objective is to encourage companies to increase active domestic connections and expand the PNG network.

Therefore, consumers should not assume that the announcement means a direct subsidy or free PNG connection for every household.

What Should Consumers Check Before Switching to PNG?

If PNG becomes available in your area, compare the overall cost before making a decision.

Check the connection and installation charges, security deposit, applicable gas tariff and any recurring charges. You should also understand the billing process and payment options offered by your local distributor.

For households already equipped with a PNG meter, asking the distributor about activation may be worthwhile.

A Push Toward Wider PNG Adoption

The new incentive scheme is designed to increase the number of households actually using piped natural gas rather than simply increasing the number of installed connections.

With the scheme beginning on September 1, 2026, gas distribution companies will have an added incentive to activate unused household connections and expand their networks. For consumers, the most immediate step is to check whether PNG is available in their area and whether an existing inactive connection can now be activated.
