A tragic incident has emerged from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, where a 28-year-old prison guard posted at Naini Central Jail allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself in his rented accommodation on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Prithviraj Chauhan, a native of Mohammadabad Gohna in Mau district.
Prithviraj had been serving in the prison department since 2021 and was living alone in Prayagraj Colony in the Naini area. The incident came to light when he failed to report for his night duty on Sunday. After repeated phone calls from jail authorities went unanswered, a fellow guard was sent to check on him.
Finding the room locked from inside, the guard looked through a window and saw Prithviraj hanging. Police were immediately informed, following which the door was broken open and the body was taken down. The body was later sent for post-mortem examination.
According to family members, Prithviraj had gotten engaged a few months ago and was scheduled to be married next month. Preparations for the wedding were underway at his home. It was revealed that shortly before the incident, he had a long phone conversation with his fiancée. After the call, his phone was switched off. When his fiancée grew anxious and alerted the family, efforts to contact him failed.
Police said no suicide note was recovered from the room. Earlier on Sunday, Prithviraj had spoken casually with his sister during a video call and had inquired about his father’s visit to Prayagraj, making the incident even more shocking for the family.
Authorities have seized his mobile phone and are examining call records and chat history to ascertain the circumstances that may have led to the suicide. Further investigation is ongoing.
