A devastating accident shook Karachi’s Lyari area when a five-storey building collapsed, leading to a massive rescue operation that lasted about 53 hours. Officials recovered a total of 27 bodies, among which 20 belonged to a single Hindu family — relatives who tragically lost their lives in the disaster.
According to a BBC report, the most astonishing aspect of this tragedy is the survival of a three-month-old baby girl from the same family. Despite the severity of the collapse, the infant escaped serious injury, sustaining only minor wounds. Her survival has been widely regarded as a miracle.
The cause of the building collapse remains unclear, with authorities yet to pinpoint exact reasons. The Sindh government noted that out of approximately 22 dilapidated buildings in Lyari, 14 had already been evacuated. This particular building was also reported to be in a weak and unsafe condition, which likely contributed to the collapse.
Rescue worker Mazhar Ali shared details of the miraculous rescue, stating that when rescuers arrived, they immediately began searching under the rubble for survivors. They found the baby girl alive and healthy near the debris, while the bodies of her mother and other family members were located some distance away.
Mazhar explained that the infant’s body was covered in dust, and she had a minor nosebleed but no major injuries. He speculated that the mother may have thrown the baby away from herself as the debris fell, saving the child’s life at the cost of her own.
This miraculous survival amidst such a heartbreaking loss has left many deeply moved and reflective on the fragility and resilience of life.
