MG Motor has introduced a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) option for two of its premium electric vehicles in India — the MG Cyberster and MG M9 EV. The new ownership model allows buyers to purchase the vehicle at a lower upfront price while paying a separate charge based on battery usage.
The BaaS option is being offered through MG's premium retail network, MG Select, giving customers an alternative way to own these luxury electric vehicles.
What Is MG's BaaS Model?
Under the Battery-as-a-Service model, the cost of the battery is separated from the upfront vehicle price. Instead of paying the full battery cost while purchasing the car, customers pay a fixed amount based on the distance travelled.
Under the current offering:
-
MG Cyberster BaaS price: ₹72.49 lakh
-
MG M9 EV BaaS price: ₹69.99 lakh
-
Battery rental: ₹8 per kilometre for both models
These are the prices under the BaaS structure, while applicable battery rental and other charges should be considered separately when calculating the overall ownership cost.
MG Cyberster: A Powerful Electric Roadster
The MG Cyberster is a performance-focused electric roadster with a sporty design and a dual-motor setup.
It gets a 77 kWh battery pack and produces a maximum output of 503.02 bhp along with 725 Nm of peak torque.
According to MG, the Cyberster can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds.
The company claims a driving range of up to 580 km on a full charge, although real-world range can vary depending on traffic, road conditions, weather and driving style.
The Cyberster's design takes inspiration from the classic MGB Roadster. Some of its standout design elements include electrically operated scissor-style doors, sporty seats and a low, aerodynamic profile.
MG M9 EV: Luxury Electric MPV
The MG M9 is positioned as a premium electric MPV focused more on passenger comfort and luxury.
It comes with a 90 kWh NMC battery pack and an electric motor producing 241.65 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque.
The M9 has a claimed range of 548 km. MG says the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes under suitable charging conditions.
Premium Features Inside the MG M9
The M9 comes with several features aimed at providing a luxury experience, particularly for rear-seat passengers.
Key features include:
-
12.3-inch digital touchscreen infotainment system
-
Panoramic sunroof
-
Cruise control
-
Automatic climate control
-
13-speaker audio system with subwoofer and amplifier
-
64-colour ambient lighting
-
Premium Presidential Seats
The Presidential Seats offer 16-way adjustment along with eight massage modes, heating and ventilation functions, making the rear cabin one of the key highlights of the M9.
MG Select Expands Its Premium Network
MG Motor is also expanding its MG Select retail network to cater to customers interested in its premium vehicles.
According to the company, MG Select currently has 15 experience centres across 14 cities in India. The network is intended to offer customers a dedicated premium retail and ownership experience for models such as the Cyberster and M9.
With the BaaS option, buyers now have another way to structure the upfront cost of these luxury electric vehicles, although the ₹8-per-kilometre battery rental should be factored into the overall cost of ownership.
