The central government has brought some relief to shopkeepers. The news is that the government has postponed the MDR charge on UPI payments until Diwali, the festival of lights. It was originally scheduled to be implemented on October 15th. Under this, shopkeepers were to be charged 0.4% on UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000.
According to reports, NPCI has decided to defer the MDR charge on UPI payments in view of the festive season. NPCI has stated that it will implement this immediately after Diwali. However, the date has not been disclosed yet. This decision by NPCI will undoubtedly bring relief to shopkeepers and the public.
It's worth noting that shopkeepers will incur a 0.4% charge on payments over 2,000. Shopkeepers will be charged a fee of 300 rupees for every transaction of 75,000 rupees or more. A flat 5 rupees charge will apply for payments over 2,000 for railways, telecom, insurance, and fuel.
