Janmashtami holds significant importance in Hinduism, celebrated in two forms: Masik (monthly) Janmashtami and the annual Shri Krishna Janmashtami. While the popular Shri Krishna Janmashtami occurs once a year in the month of Bhadrapada, Masik Janmashtami happens every month.
According to the Hindu calendar, Masik Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) of Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight) of every month. Devotees fast and offer prayers to Laddu Gopal on this day. When this falls during the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month, it is called Shri Krishna Janmashtami or Krishna Jayanti, celebrated with grand festivities and large gatherings.
| Aspect | Shri Krishna Janmashtami | Masik Janmashtami |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency | Once a year | Every month |
| Date | Ashtami of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada | Ashtami of Krishna Paksha every month |
| Importance | Lord Krishna’s birth anniversary | Regular worship and devotion |
| Celebration | Grand and public | Personal and less grand |
| Objective | Celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna | Remember Lord Krishna |
Masik Janmashtami is believed to fulfill all wishes, remove sins, and grant salvation when devotees worship Lord Krishna on the correct Tithi. Shri Krishna Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, who was born on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in Bhadrapada month under Rohini Nakshatra. Fasting on this day is said to bring desired outcomes.
For 2025, the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in Margashirsha month begins on November 11th at 11:08 pm and ends on November 12th at 10:58 pm. Thus, Masik Janmashtami will be observed on November 12, 2025.
