Market Shake-Up! These Two Tata Cars Snatch Over 42,000 Buyers in One Month

Two cars from Tata Motors have created havoc in the Indian auto market at the start of 2026. The Tata Nexon and Tata Punch delivered a stunning sales performance in January, together attracting 42,622 buyers and helping Tata Motors leap ahead of key rivals.

In January 2026, the Tata Nexon emerged as the best-selling car in the country, while the Tata Punch secured the third position overall, finishing just behind the Maruti Dzire. Despite that, Punch retained its second spot in the SUV segment, underlining its massive popularity.

Nexon–Punch Power Drives Tata to No. 2

Thanks largely to these two models, Tata Motors became the second-largest carmaker in India, overtaking both Hyundai and Mahindra.

  • Total Tata sales (January 2026): 70,222 units

  • Year-on-year growth: 46.1%

  • Nexon sales: 23,365 units

  • Punch sales: 19,257 units

Combined, Nexon and Punch accounted for over 50% of Tata’s total passenger vehicle sales in January. Notably, Mahindra had held the second position in December 2025 but slipped behind Tata in January.

Tata Sierra Adds to the Momentum

Tata Motors also kicked off 2026 with its highest-ever monthly passenger vehicle sales, making January the best month in the company’s history.

Although Tata has not yet revealed detailed sales figures for the newly launched Tata Sierra, the response has been phenomenal. Over 70,000 bookings were recorded within just 24 hours of opening, signaling strong demand.

Strong EV Growth Strengthens Tata’s Position

Tata’s dominance in the electric vehicle segment continues to grow:

  • Total EV sales (domestic + exports): 9,052 units

  • YoY EV growth: 72.7%

  • Domestic sales: 70,222 units

  • Exports: 844 units

Big Picture

With the Nexon and Punch leading from the front and the Sierra showing blockbuster potential, Tata Motors has firmly established itself as Maruti Suzuki’s biggest challenger in early 2026. If this momentum continues, Tata’s grip on both the SUV and EV segments will only get stronger.
