Mahindra is preparing to expand its SUV portfolio, and the upcoming Mahindra Vision S is attracting attention after being spotted testing once again on Indian roads. The latest sighting reportedly comes from the challenging terrain of Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, suggesting that the company is evaluating the vehicle under different driving conditions.
First unveiled as a concept in August 2025, the Vision S is part of Mahindra's upcoming SUV family based on its new NU_IQ platform. The production version is expected to arrive in 2027, although the company has not officially confirmed the final name, launch date or complete specifications.
Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming SUV.
1. Mahindra Vision S: What Will Its Design Look Like?
Despite the heavy camouflage on the test vehicle, its overall silhouette appears similar to the original concept. The SUV features a boxy profile, an upright stance and a rugged appearance that could appeal to buyers who prefer traditional SUV styling.
At the front, the expected design elements include a wide grille, vertically arranged slats, distinctive L-shaped lighting elements and large air intakes. The muscular bonnet and upright front end further emphasise its robust character.
The side profile features prominent wheel arches, body cladding, recessed door handles and side steps. The test vehicle has also been reported to feature alloy wheels that could measure around 18 inches, although the final specifications remain unconfirmed.
At the rear, the tailgate-mounted spare wheel, vertical tail lamps and upright tailgate contribute to its traditional off-road-inspired appearance.
Overall, the Vision S appears designed to combine a compact, practical SUV body with the bold styling associated with Mahindra's rugged vehicles.
2. Modern Cabin Expected With Dual Screens
The Vision S is expected to combine its rugged exterior with a contemporary cabin. Images and reports from testing suggest a dashboard featuring two large screens, potentially comprising a touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital instrument cluster.
The cabin is also expected to feature vertically oriented air-conditioning vents and physical buttons for essential functions. Retaining physical controls could make frequently used features easier to operate while driving.
A six-speed manual gearbox has reportedly been observed in a test vehicle. However, the final transmission options and equipment list could differ when the production model arrives.
Features such as electrically adjustable seats, ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof have not been officially confirmed. Buyers will have to wait for Mahindra to reveal the final interior layout and equipment package.
3. Petrol and Diesel Engines Could Be Offered
The Mahindra Vision S is expected to use the company's NU_IQ modular platform, which is designed to support different vehicle configurations and powertrain options.
Petrol and diesel engines are among the possibilities being discussed for the production SUV. Hybrid and fully electric powertrains have also attracted speculation around the broader platform strategy, but their availability specifically for the Vision S has not been confirmed.
Important details, including engine displacement, power output, torque, fuel efficiency and transmission choices, remain unknown.
The final powertrain lineup will play an important role in determining whether the SUV is positioned primarily for urban buyers, long-distance travellers or customers seeking more rugged driving capabilities.
4. Why Is Mahindra Testing the SUV in Spiti Valley?
Testing in challenging terrain can help manufacturers evaluate how vehicles perform under different road and environmental conditions. Spiti Valley, with its mountainous roads, uneven surfaces and changing temperatures, offers a demanding environment for vehicle development.
Repeated sightings indicate that testing is continuing, although they do not by themselves confirm the vehicle's final specifications or readiness for launch.
For a vehicle with an SUV-inspired design, evaluations involving suspension performance, handling, cooling and overall durability can be important parts of development. The exact tests being conducted on the Vision S have not been officially disclosed.
5. Mahindra Vision S Launch Timeline and Expected Price
The production version of the Mahindra Vision S is currently expected to launch in 2027. However, Mahindra has not announced an exact launch date or confirmed the final production name.
Pricing has also not been revealed. Its eventual price will depend on the engine lineup, equipment levels, positioning and the features included in the production model.
Until the company makes an official announcement, any estimated price range should be treated as speculation rather than a confirmed figure.
What Can Buyers Expect From the Mahindra Vision S?
The Vision S could become an interesting addition to Mahindra's SUV lineup, particularly for buyers attracted to boxy styling, a high-riding stance and a cabin equipped with modern technology.
Its production version will need to balance design, everyday practicality, performance and pricing to appeal to a broad range of customers.
For now, the renewed testing activity offers a glimpse of Mahindra's ongoing development work. More concrete information about the SUV's engine options, safety equipment, interior features and launch plans is expected as the project progresses towards production.
